100 years ago today, at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War ends. At 5 a.m. that morning, Germany, bereft of manpower and supplies and faced with imminent invasion, signed an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside Compiégne, France.
Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938.
Today, Boy Scouts of Troop, 51 with the support of Veterans of Post 615, posted flags over Waynesville. Following the posting of the flags, the Veterans and Scouts retired flags at the American Legion flag retirement fire pit.
In accordance with United Stated Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, §176.k: The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
